Martin Welch Painting WorkShop
February 24, 2016 - February 25, 2016
GAEDA Education Series
A graduate of Spring Hill Colleage, in Mobile, Alabama, Martin Welch was born in Salem, Oregon, before moving to his father’s home state of Mississippi at the age of four.
Since becoming a full time artist in New Orleans in 1998, Welch has cemented his style as a contemporary impressionist using energetic brush strokes and bright colors. A colorist that applies luscious hues of vividness to the canvas, Welch uses common, ordinary imagery and intensifies the importance of things by painting them larger than life. With numerous solo exhibitions and awards including, being named one of the ten best artists in New Orleans by The New Orleans Museum of Art in 2008, Welch’s iconic oil and acrylic paintings have been used in both television and film and his work evokes emotion with well planned spontaneity.
“The Colorist Experience”
Feb. 24 & 25th (two day continuum)
10 a.m. – 4 p.m. (Hour break for lunch)
$75 per person (includes all supplies)
Students will work with one of Welch’s most popular themes, Louisiana seafood (fish). Simple images of Southern scenes, set within the complexity of bright colors mixed on individual canvases, will set the tone for this two day course. Students will study the premise of under-painting and layering with rags, towels, brushes and palette knives to evoke the reveal of a finished product.
